Milestones that Made Us
From our beginnings to today, Maine State Credit Union has grown through purpose, people, and community. Explore the chapters that have shaped our story.
Late 1920s
During the Great Depression, a group of state employees gathered to discuss how to provide small emergency loans to fellow workers.
1935
Our original charter was approved, establishing our founding mission: to help members save and access fair, productive credit—values we still uphold today.
1930s
By decade’s end, 437 of 500 eligible State House employees and their families had joined, each with a 25¢ deposit and a $5 share.
1942
Following wartime challenges and declining membership, new legislation was enacted to strengthen the credit union movement.
1944
We became a state-chartered credit union and expanded membership to all state employees, adopting the name Maine State Employees’ Credit Union.
2003
With our community charter granted, membership was expanded to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Kennebec County.
2005
Our name changed to Maine State Credit Union to reflect our broader community charter and growing membership.
2006
We merged with Greater Waterville Area FCU, opened our Waterville branch, and expanded membership to include Somerset County.
2022
Maine State CU is ranked among Forbes’ Best‑in‑State Credit Unions for Maine and opened its Gray branch.
2023
We opened our Rockland full-service branch and hosted the 18th annual FeedMe 5K, raising over $60,000 for local hunger relief. We were also included on Forbes’ Best-in-State Credit Union list for the second year in a row.
2024
Named one of Maine’s Best-in-State Credit Unions for the third year in a row, we continued to grow by opening a new 9,000 sq. ft. operations center in Farmingdale to support our eBranch, loan servicing, and digital banking teams.
2025
Recognized by Forbes as one of America’s Best-in-State Credit Unions for the fourth year in a row.
2026
Scheduled opening for a new full-service branch in Belfast, continuing our commitment to expanding convenient local access across Maine.
From the mountains to the coast, we’re here to uplift the financial lives of Mainers—one member, one goal, one community at a time.
Since 1935, we’ve woven personal service into everything we do, enriched by digital tools that meet you where life takes you. Through every change, one thing endures: at Maine State Credit Union, our members have alway been–and always will be–our bottom line.
