What to Shred
You should shred anything that has your personal information, address or account numbers. This includes:
Junk mail
ATM receipts
Credit card receipts
Store receipts of items that you are keeping and cannot return
Bills that have been paid
Used Airline, Bus, Train Tickets
Items that can be shred after time
Tax Information & Returns | Tax information and returns should be kept for between 3-7 years |
Investment Records & Statements | Most recent version. You should consider signing up for eStatements and you will have immediate access to what you need. |
Bank Statements & canceled checks | Up to one year. Consider signing up eStatements and you will have immediate access to what you need |
Pay Stubs | Up to one year. You should keep until you receive your W2 from your employer(s) |
Home financial information | Deeds, mortgages, and information on home improvements should be kept as long as you own the house. |
Medical Bills | Up to 1 year until bills are paid and all disputed are settled. |
