Some facts on Hunger

The money raised at this event will be used  in conjunction with the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. The Credit Union Campaign for Ending Hunger was developed by the Maine Credit Union League  as a way to create a statewide social responsibility program to help end hunger in Maine. Since 1990, Maine credit unions statewide have joined together to raise over $2 million for this important cause.

Registration

To register for the walk, we ask that you complete a registration form and return it to Maine State Credit Union.  You may register online or print a registration form from a pdf file.

Sponsors

Walkers are asked to obtain pledges from sponsors.  All money raised will benefit Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger.  Sponsorship forms can be printed from our website.  Please click here to print  the pdf form.

Participants raising more than $100 will receive a Walk to Stop Hunger T-Shirt. There will also be prizes awarded to the individual and team that raises the most money overall.

Looking for tips on how to raise money? Here is an easy process for raising $100.

  • Ask 2 co-workers for $5 each
  • Ask your boss for $20
  • Ask 4 friends for $10 each
  • Ask 1 local business for $30

Q.   When is the Walk to Stop Hunger?
A.   Saturday, April 26, 2008

Q.   Where does the walk take place?
A.    The walk will take place on the Kennebec River Rail Trail. The walk will kick-off at Capital Park.  Simply follow the signs.

Q.  What time does the walk begin?
A.  Registration begins at 9:00 and the walk will start at 10:00 a.m.

Q.   How long is the walk?
A.   The walk is 5K, about 3.1 miles.

Q.  Who benefits from the money raised from the walk?
A.  All proceeds from the walk will be distributed to food pantries and related organizations to help feed hungry families throughout Kennebec and Somerset County.

Q.  What is the Campaign to End Hunger?
A.  The Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger was developed by the Maine Credit Union League as a way to create a statewide social responsibility program to help end hunger in Maine.  Since 1990, Maine credit unions have joined together to raise over $2.7 million for this important cause.

Q.  Can we organize a team or group to walk together?
A.   Certainly.  Organizing a team is a great way to have some fun while raising money for a worthy cause.  Teams can range in size from 2 to 102 (or more) and can include walkers from Augusta area companies, schools, churches or community organizations or simply a family or group of friends.  Set a fund raising goal for your team and watch how your group effort really makes a difference. 

Q.  Is there an entry fee for the walk?
A.  No.  Walkers are asked to collect pledges from sponsors and bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food pantry.

Q.  To whom do I make checks payable and where do I send them?
A.  Checks should be made payable to Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger.  Your pledge money should be submitted on the day of the walk and brought to the registration station.

Q.  Where do I sign in the morning of the walk?
A.  A registration station will be set up at Capital Park.  Just follow the signs.

Q.  What is the schedule of events for the day of the walk?
A.    9:00 a.m. –     Registration and sign in; walkers turn in donations and pick up t-shirts.
        9:45 a.m. –     Welcome and opening ceremony
       10:00 a.m. –    The walk begins
       11:00 a.m. –    Post-walk celebration and BBQ lunch, kids fun run, and music.  Meal options include two hot dogs, chips, and a soda for $3.00 or one hamburger, one hot dog, chips, and a soda for $3.00.  All proceeds go to the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger.

Volunteer Opportunities

Want to help support a great cause but don’t want to walk? Or want do more than walk? Maine State Credit Union and UMA are also looking for a group of volunteers to help in the following areas:

• Community Outreach - Help solicit participation from other individuals and businesses.

• Promotion - Hang up posters and distribute flyers and brochures to local businesses, churches, schools, and libraries.

Event Coordination - Assist with registration, putting up signs, setting up, and helping walkers

Whether you’re looking to donate a few hours of your time every week, or just a couple of hours on the day of the event, we would like to talk to you.
